Black lanterns glowing warm on cream pillars beside a wide car gate and a narrow wicket gate at dusk

Matching the main gate and the wicket gate with one lantern design

A lot of Indian boundary walls have two openings side by side. One is the wide car gate between a pair of broad pillars. The other is a narrow wicket gate for people on foot, usually set between a slimmer pair. When the elevation calls for a lantern on all four pillars and the architect wants them to read as one design, the usual answer is a single catalogue code ordered in two of its listed sizes. The full range of post top heads is on the gate lights page. This note answers one narrower question, how to split a single design across the two pairs.

The questions below are the ones a dealer tends to send us on WhatsApp when a contractor hands him this kind of front wall. We have written them up as a composite brief, with no named client.

The brief behind the questions

A house on a corner plot has a car gate between two pillars with wide caps. A few steps along the same wall there is a pedestrian gate, between two pillars that are narrower and a little shorter. The owner wants matte black heads on all four. The contractor is building two more houses for the same builder with the same front wall, so the dealer is pricing three walls at once.

Questions from the dealer, with our answers

Can we fix one size on all four pillars and keep it simple?

Only when all four caps are close to the same width. The header photograph is a generated image of that case, with equal heads on pillars of similar size. Where the wicket pillars are slimmer, a head chosen for the wide car gate caps will hang over the edge of the small caps, and from the road the pedestrian gate looks top heavy. Sizing each pair to its own cap keeps a similar margin of plaster around every base, and that margin is what makes four lanterns of two sizes look like a set.

Which codes are made in more than one size?

Of the 93 codes on the gate lights page, 35 are listed in two or more sizes. A few that step down cleanly, with height by width in inches as given on each product page:

  • Matte Black PGL 1013 in 30×14, 25×10 and 17×8, PGL 1025 in 27×14, 22×12 and 17×10, and PGL 1057 in 32×14, 26×12, 20×9 and 13×6.
  • Antique PGL 1020 in 29×14, 24×10, 16×8 and 13×6, PGL 1037 in 32×18, 20×12, 16×7 and 13×7, and PGL 1095 in 36×15, 21×9 and 13×7.
  • Raw Grey PGL 1001 in 24×10, 20×8 and 16×7, PGL 1046 in 30×12, 24×12 and 18×8, and PGL 1072 in 20×11 and 14×8.

The rest of the multi-size codes are on the same page. Filter by finish first, then open each product page to see how many sizes it carries.

How far down should the wicket size go?

Let the two caps decide. Tape each pair separately, then pick the listed width that sits comfortably on the car gate cap and, from the same code, the listed width that sits on the wicket cap. Often that is the next size down. On PGL 1057, for example, a car gate that takes the 26×12 might pair with the 20×9 on the wicket. When the wicket pillars are very slim, the 13×6 can be the right choice, two steps below. Use the tape steps from pillar size to lantern size for each pair on its own.

Look at the pillar heights too. A wicket pillar that is both slimmer and shorter suits the shorter head, since a tall lantern on a short pillar brings the glass close to eye level for anyone walking through. Each listed size has its own dimension drawing on the product page, so open the two drawings side by side before you confirm.

Will a big head and a small head of one code really look related?

That is why the multi-size codes exist. One design is offered at several heights so the look can follow the pillars. Keep the finish identical on both sizes and keep the glass the same as well, clear on all four or frosted on all four. Mixing glass between the pairs is the quickest way to make the two gates look as if they came from two shops. Clear or frosted lantern glass helps settle which one suits the frontage.

How do we stop the two sizes coming out in slightly different blacks?

Put both sizes on one order, as two lines under the same code and finish, so they are coated and packed together. If the wicket pair is added a month later as a separate order, the powder coat can differ a little from the first lot, and the difference shows when the four heads sit a few metres apart on one wall. Wall lanterns on the same boundary should join that order in the same finish. They are on the wall lights page, and where to mark wall lantern height covers their centre marks.

Does the wicket pair need its own cable?

Treat it like the car gate. If the pillars are still being built, ask the electrician to run a conduit up through the core of each wicket pillar and leave the cable at the centre of the cap, so nothing runs down the plaster later. Whether the wicket heads share a switch with the car gate heads is a wiring decision for the electrician, and the lantern is the same either way. The full build sequence for a new pillar is in preparing a new villa gate pillar for its lantern.

Four pieces for one house. Is that a trade price?

Four pieces sit in retail, where list price covers one to five pieces. Across the three identical walls in this brief the dealer is ordering 12 heads, six of each size, and trade lots start at 10 pieces. Orders of 100 pieces and above are priced as projects. Billing is in INR, ex-works Aligarh. Packing is ₹40 a piece, as each product page shows, and freight is quoted on top. The shipping page explains how freight is worked out.

Should we take empty housings or finished lanterns?

Either works, and the choice can differ by line. Some contractors glaze and wire on site, others want the head ready with glass and LED. The holder fitted at the works is B22 unless your quote names a different one. The trade side of that choice is weighed up in empty housing or glass and LED.

What if the design the client likes comes in only one size?

Then that code suits the job only when all four caps can take the same head. Otherwise, choose a multi-size code with a similar outline from the gate lights page. A design that is outside the catalogue altogether can be cast from your sample on a run of fifty pieces or more, described in custom replica from a sample.

What to send for a two-size quote

Send a photo of each pillar pair with the tape across the cap, the cap widths and pillar heights in inches, the code you have shortlisted, the finish, the glass, and how many pieces of each size. Add the city of the site. WhatsApp the trade desk at +91 70176 62533 and we will reply with the two sizes that seat on your caps. Each code above, with its dimension drawing, is also printed in the 2026 catalogue PDF.
